Jalandhar: Police Commissioner issues order to prevent noise pollution; ban on loud music at night

In exercise of the powers vested in her under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Protection Code, 2023, Police Commissioner Dhanpreet Kaur has banned the blowing of horns in silence zones or residential areas from 10 pm to 6 am except in cases of public emergency in view of the prevention of noise pollution.

The orders issued by the Police Commissioner, citing the orders of the Hon’ble Supreme Court, have directed that the sound level of public places where loudspeakers or public address systems or any sound-producing source are being used should be kept at the prescribed level for the area.

According to the orders, no person shall play drums or trumpets, any sound-producing device, sound amplifiers, or DJs, etc. in marriage palaces and hotels between 10 pm and 6 am (except in cases of public emergency). Similarly, the noise level of a privately owned sound system or sound-generating device shall not exceed the noise standards prescribed for the boundary area of ​​a private place of 5 dB(A).

The orders also state that in the case of vehicles having music systems, it should be ensured that the sound generated by the music system is not audible outside the vehicle at any time of the day. If any violation of these orders is found, the sound devices will be seized. This order will remain in force till July 8, 2026
