All restaurants and clubs in Jalandhar ordered to close by 12 AM, DJs and loud music banned after 10 p.m.

Jalandhar: The Jalandhar Police Commissionerate has issued strict new guidelines for restaurants, eating places and clubs, making it mandatory for all such establishments to close by midnight (12 am) and all loud music, including DJ systems, to be stopped after 10 pm.

The directive issued by Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur, IPS, under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (2023), aims to ensure peace, public safety and law and order in the city, especially during the late night hours.

    What the order says:

No food or drink orders will be accepted in any restaurant, hotel or club after 11:30 pm.

No new customers will be allowed after 11:30 pm.

All restaurants, clubs and licensed eating places must be completely closed by midnight, i.e. 12:00 am.

Premises attached to liquor shops should also be closed by 12:00 or as per their licensing rules.

As per the Supreme Court guidelines, the noise emitted from any establishment should not exceed 10 decibels or 75 decibels (whichever is lower) above the ambient level.

All sound sources, such as DJs, live orchestras, or singers, should be switched off or their volume should be reduced by 10 pm. After this time, no sound should be heard outside any establishment or campus.

The sound of music systems installed in vehicles should also not be audible outside the vehicle.

    To maintain law and order

The order said that many restaurants and clubs in the city play loud music till late at night, which disturbs the peace in the surrounding areas and increases the chances of any untoward incident.

The Police Commissioner said, “To ensure law and order and public safety, it has become necessary to regulate the working hours and sound systems of restaurants, clubs and eating places.”

The order has been implemented with immediate effect in the Jalandhar Police Commissionerate area. Legal action will be taken against any establishment violating the rules.

While local residents are welcoming the move, some hotel and restaurant owners said it could impact night sales.
