Jalandhar: Retd Inspector commits suicide, mental stress due to domestic dispute cited

A deeply tragic and shocking incident has emerged from Kaniyan Kalan village near Shahkot, Jalandhar. Harbhajan Singh (68), a retired Punjab Police Inspector, ended his life by consuming a poisonous substance due to mental stress.

According to the deceased’s wife, he took this extreme step out of distress caused by an ongoing dispute between their son and daughter-in-law (who reside in New Zealand), as well as the false cases filed by the daughter-in-law’s family and the constant threats they were receiving. The police recovered a suicide note from the scene, which lists the names of several individuals. The Shahkot police have registered a case against the accused and initiated an investigation.

In her statement to the Shahkot police, the deceased’s wife, Kulwant Kaur, explained that after retiring from the Punjab Police, her husband had been managing farming activities in the village. They have three children, two daughters and a son all of whom are married and currently living in New Zealand.

She stated that their son, Amarpreet Singh, married Navdeep Kaur—a native of Paniar village in Gurdaspur—on May 5, 2025. About 18 days after the wedding, the couple moved to New Zealand. However, discord arose between them after their arrival there. The dispute escalated to the point where Amarpreet Singh filed for divorce in a New Zealand court; the matter is currently pending.
