Jalandhar Roadways Employees Halt Bus Services After Driver’s Murder in Kurali

Jalandhar: The murder of Jalandhar Roadways depot driver Jagjit with a rod in Kurali has angered the temporary employees’ union. Consequently, the drivers and conductors of the Jalandhar Roadways depot have stopped the roadways buses. The buses have been parked inside the depot. Punjab Roadways Depot-1 President Vikramjit Singh said that the body will be brought to Jalandhar in the afternoon. A demonstration will be held there. Roadways union members have even arranged for a freezer for this purpose.

Unions Demand ₹1 Crore Compensation and Government Job

Senior Meet Pradhan Chanan Singh of the temporary employees union said that if the government does not announce a government job and assistance of Rs 1 crore to Jagjit Singh’s family, then the roadways buses of all 27 depots across Punjab will be stopped after 10 am on Thursday.

Bus services have been suspended since Wednesday evening.

The temporary employees of the Jalandhar roadways depot started a protest by parking the buses inside the depot around 5 pm on Wednesday. Chanan Singh of the Roadways Employees Union said that the government has not assured any compensation for the deceased driver. Moreover, the insurance scheme for temporary employees has also been discontinued. Employee Jagjit Singh was married and had two children. How will his family survive in such a situation?

Protest Planned With Body if Demands Not Met

Leaders of the Punjab Roadways Jalandhar Depot Driver-Conductor Union stated that driver Jagjit’s postmortem will be conducted today at the government hospital in Mohali. His funeral is scheduled for today. However, if the government does not assure the family of financial assistance and a job, they will protest against the government by placing the dead body on the road.

Colleagues Mourn Jagjit Singh’s Death

Jalandhar Depot-1 chief Vikramjit Singh said, “Jagjit Singh was our colleague. He had only been employed for about 12 years. He has two young children and a wife. His parents are already deceased. There is no earning member in the family. The employees are currently collecting money on their own and giving it to the family so they can perform the last rites. We are struggling to get the money from the government. We have also spoken to the officials of the bank where our employees’ salary accounts were held so that we can get some claim from the bank.”

The body is being brought from Kharar and will arrive by noon.

Vikramjit said that the body of driver Jagjit is being brought from Kharar. Our colleague will arrive here around 1:30 pm. We have ordered a freezer to store the body. The employees of Jalandhar Depot-1 will protest here to get justice for their colleague. If justice is not served, government buses will be stopped across Punjab.
