Srinagar, Oct 24: Candidates from the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) performed resoundingly well in the first Rajya Sabha elections held in Jammu and Kashmir after the revocation of Article 370. Three party leaders, Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Sajad Kitchloo, and Shami Oberoi, won victories in the initial rounds.
Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan received 58 votes. A total of 86 out of 88 MLAs cast their votes, including detained MLA Mehraj Malik, who cast his vote via postal ballot.
Congress and PDP support the alliance
With the support of Congress, PDP, CPI(M), AIP, and six independent MLAs, the NC alliance crossed the majority mark, securing comfortable victories for its candidates. This confirms the party’s strong position in the Assembly.
Tough contest for the fourth seat
BJP’s Satpal Sharma has won the ongoing Rajya Sabha elections in Jammu and Kashmir.
However, BJP’s performance in the ongoing count for the fourth seat has prevented a total sweep by Omar Abdullah’s party.
Four seats were vacant since 2021
Four Rajya Sabha seats fell vacant in February 2021 when the terms of PDP MPs Mir Mohammad Fayaz and Nazir Ahmed Laway, BJP MP Shamsher Singh, and senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad ended.
This time, the NC fielded four candidates—Chaudhary Mohammad Ramzan, Shami Oberoi, Sajad Kitchloo, and Imran Nabi Dar—while the BJP fielded three candidates.
Congress extends support for a “greater cause”
A day before the elections, the Congress and PDP announced their support to the NC, further strengthening the party’s position.
Jammu and Kashmir Congress President Tariq Hameed Karra said:
“Keeping in mind the larger objective and our fight against the BJP, we have decided to cast our six votes in favor of the NC, setting aside our past resentment against it.”
