J-K: ₹331 Crore in Unclaimed Deposits at J&K Bank and ₹77 Crore at SBI

In the banks of Jammu and Kashmir, a sum of ₹492 crore remains as unclaimed deposits belonging to the public. This amount is held in accounts that have remained dormant without any claims being made for years. To ensure this money reaches its rightful owners, the Central Government conducted a three-month-long campaign.

However, this initiative did not yield any significant results within the region. Out of the total ₹507 crore, only ₹15 crore could be successfully returned. To facilitate the return of unclaimed deposits, the Central Government launched a nationwide campaign titled ‘Aapki Punji, Aapka Adhikar’ (Your Capital, Your Right), which ran from October 1 to December 31, 2025.

This initiative involved the participation of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), SEBI, insurance regulators, and various other financial institutions. Banks were instructed to reach out to former account holders and their families through phone calls, text messages, and by organising special camps to ensure that the funds lying dormant in these accounts for years could finally be returned to the people.

Across the region’s banks, a total of ₹507.17 crore was identified as unclaimed deposits held across 17.89 lakh bank accounts. Banks in every district conducted campaigns urging people to come forward and file their claims. Funds were successfully returned to those individuals who submitted claims. However, the number of people who actually filed claims was quite low, resulting in the return of only ₹15.03 crore.

You Can Search for Your Funds on the RBI Portal

If you suspect that you may have overlooked an old bank account, Fixed Deposit (FD), or other form of deposit, you can access this information on the Reserve Bank’s *UDGAM* portal. To do so, simply log in to the portal using your mobile number and provide your name and bank details. You can search for old accounts held across various banks and, upon locating your funds, file a claim with the respective bank.

When is Money Classified as an Unclaimed Deposit?

Khursheed Muzaffar, the Lead Bank Manager for the region, explains that if a bank account, Fixed Deposit (FD), pension fund, dividend, or any other form of deposit remains inactive without any transactions or claims being made against it for a continuous period of 10 years, it is officially classified as an “unclaimed deposit.”

Such accounts often remain dormant for years because individuals either forget about them, change jobs or cities, or, in the event of the account holder’s demise information regarding the account fails to reach the family members, or because no nominee has been designated. He also appealed to people to come forward and claim their unclaimed deposits.
