Jammu: Polythene banned in Pahalgam, violations punishable by fine of ₹2,000

Pahalgam: The use of polythene has been banned in Pahalgam. The Pahalgam Development Authority has taken this step to protect the environment. The banned items include plastic bags, chips packets, plastic bottles, plastic plates, and canned drinks. Anyone found littering or throwing banned plastic items will be fined ₹2,000.

Polythene banned due to environmental concerns

Citing environmental concerns, the Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) has banned the use and carrying of polythene and other plastic items in tourist hotspots, river banks, forest areas, markets, and residential areas within its jurisdiction.

According to an order issued by PDA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mir Nasrul Hilal, this step was taken following increasing incidents of littering in rivers, forest areas, parks, and markets due to the dumping of plastic bags, chips packets, water bottles, plastic crockery (disposable), and canned drink containers.

Polythene dangerous for Humans and Animals 

The order states that non-biodegradable waste poses a threat to the environment. It is dangerous to the lives of both humans and animals. Considering Pahalgam’s fragile ecology and the need to promote eco-friendly tourism, all such areas have been declared polythene-free zones with immediate effect. They warned that any violations will be dealt with strictly as per the rules. Continued violations may result in the cancellation of registration certificates issued by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department.

These instructions have been sent to senior tourism officials, the Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Pahalgam, municipal officials, the Forest and Wildlife Department, and enforcement inspectors for necessary action. Furthermore, the PDA has appointed special teams to ensure that the order is not violated on the ground. Stakeholders in the tourism sector have welcomed this move, calling for strict enforcement.
