Jammu: Petrol and diesel run out at 13 pumps; long queues where fuel is available

Sudden reports of a severe shortage of petrol and diesel have caused alarm among the general public. Queues of vehicles have been observed at petrol pumps since early morning. The situation is such that, due to overwhelming demand, stocks have completely run out at 13 petrol pumps.

Adhering to administrative directives, the pumps have refrained from displaying “No Stock” boards; instead, pump attendants are citing technical malfunctions in the dispensing machines as the reason for the unavailability. Fear has gripped the public following reports of disruptions in the supply chain and the possibility of a strike by transporters.

Driven by panic, people are not only filling up their vehicle tanks to capacity but are also carrying away additional petrol and diesel in bottles and drums. It is this very “panic buying” that is causing pumps to run dry ahead of schedule. The long queues have also led to reports of altercations and scuffles breaking out among motorists at several locations.

    No Need to Panic

The administration and oil companies have stated that there is no need for the public to panic. They affirm that adequate stocks are available; however, the sudden surge in crowds is causing delays in the refilling of tankers. They have appealed to the public to disregard rumors and to purchase fuel only according to their actual requirements.

Pumps Will Be Shut Down If Unnecessary Crowds Persist: Chief Minister

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated that there is absolutely no shortage of LPG cylinders, petrol, or diesel within the state. Despite this, people are queuing up unnecessarily at petrol pumps. Crowds are gathering, and rumors are being circulated. Issuing a stern warning, he stated that if this situation persists, the administration may be compelled to temporarily shut down all petrol pumps for a few days until the rumors subside.
