Varanasi: On Monday, a passenger was shot dead aboard the Jammu-Tawi Express train in Varanasi. Assailants shot the passenger in the head just as he was exiting the restroom and then fled the scene. The sound of the gunshot triggered panic and chaos among the passengers.
Passengers immediately alerted the train’s running staff. The victim was a resident of Gaya, Bihar. He was traveling with his wife and other relatives to visit Naimisharanya Dham in Sitapur. The incident occurred between the Mughalsarai and Varanasi railway stations.
A team from the Railway Police has departed along with the train, while a second team has been dispatched to the victim’s village. Meanwhile, the police have sent the body for a post-mortem examination.
This marks the second murder incident on a train within just two days. Before this, on Sunday, a young man from Ghazipur was shot dead on a passenger train; his body was subsequently thrown onto the railway tracks by the assailants.
Passenger Was Traveling from Bihar to Naimisharanya Dham in Sitapur
Dinesh Shah (42), a resident of the Barchaki area in Pipariya, Gaya (Bihar), was traveling to Naimisharanya Dham in Sitapur aboard the Kolkata-Jammu Tawi Express. Accompanying him were his sister, his two children, and his sister’s mother-in-law. Dinesh Shah and his wife were seated in Coach S-2 of the train.
Meanwhile, his sister and other relatives were traveling in the General Compartment. Late on Sunday night, at approximately 2:00 AM, the train passed through Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction. Shortly before reaching ‘Block Hut-B,’ near the restroom area, Dinesh Shah was shot by an unidentified assailant.
Upon hearing the gunshot, other passengers rushed to the scene, where they found Dinesh Shah’s blood-soaked body lying on the floor. Passengers immediately informed the train’s running staff. The train arrived at Varanasi Junction at 2:42 AM, where the body was subsequently removed from the train.
Rs 15,000 Found on Passenger; Wife’s Jewelry Intact
The police stated that approximately Rs 15,000 in cash was recovered from Dinesh Shah’s person. Furthermore, his wife’s jewelry remained intact and secure. The attackers neither harmed the victim’s wife nor committed any robbery. Upon receiving news of the murder, SP GRP Prashant Verma, Circle Officer (CO) Kunwar Prabhat Singh, and RPF Assistant Security Commissioner BP Singh arrived at the GRP police station.
Following the incident, a team from the Railway Police has accompanied the train to interact with passengers and gather information regarding the attackers. Meanwhile, a second team has been dispatched to Dinesh’s village, where the police will speak with his family members. SP GRP Prashant Verma stated that every aspect related to the incident is being thoroughly examined.

Sakaldiha CO Krishnamurari Sharma stated that Mangru, a resident of Ghazipur, had traveled to Karnataka on April 26. From there, he had commenced his return journey home to Zamania by train on May 8. He was traveling aboard a passenger train bound for Tarighat, which was proceeding via Dildarnagar after departing from Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Junction. On Sunday morning, miscreants placed a pistol against his temple and shot him. Following the murder, the accused—taking his bag with them—deboarded the train before it reached Sakaldiha Railway Station and fled the scene.
