Jana Nayagan, the highly anticipated final film of Tamil star Thalapathy Vijay, faced a major setback when it lost its censor clearance in India despite initial approval. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had been set to issue a “UA16+” certificate for the political action drama, but the process was derailed due to legal and procedural complications.

 Initial Certification & Subsequent Delay

The producers of Jana Nayagan submitted the film for certification in December 2025, and an examining committee initially recommended a UA certificate after the makers agreed to minor cuts and modifications.

However, a complaint was filed alleging that certain scenes in the film hurt religious sentiments and portray the armed forces in a negative light, prompting the CBFC chairperson to refer the film to a Revising Committee an unusual move after an initial approval.

 Legal Battle in Madras High Court

When the producers approached the Madras High Court for an expedited censor certificate, a single judge initially ordered the CBFC to issue the certificate.

But on January 27, 2026, a Division Bench of the Madras High Court set aside that order, ruling that the single judge had erred in directing immediate clearance without giving the CBFC adequate time to file a response. As a result, the case was remanded for fresh consideration and the film’s release became uncertain.

This effectively meant Jana Nayagan lost its censor clearance that had been expected by its producers.

 Release Date Uncertain & Broader Impact

The film was originally scheduled for release during the Pongal festival season on January 9, but the censor dispute has postponed this.

The legal impasse has also drawn attention from supporters and critics across the industry including reactions from political circles and fans, with star Vijay himself reaffirming that he “does not bow down to any pressure” even as the court process continues.
