Janakpuri pit death: Main contractor arrested in Rajasthan

A major breakthrough has been made in the tragic biker death case in Janakpuri, where a motorcyclist died after falling into an uncovered pit. The Delhi Police has arrested the main contractor responsible for the excavation work from Udaipur after weeks of investigation and search operations.

The accused contractor, identified as Himanshu Gupta, had been absconding since the incident and was finally apprehended during a police operation in Rajasthan.

Tragic Incident That Shocked Delhi

The case relates to the death of 25-year-old Kamal Dhyani, who lost his life after his motorcycle fell into a deep pit on a poorly lit road in Janakpuri. The pit had been dug for sewage work by the Delhi Jal Board, but it was allegedly left open without proper barricades, warning signs, or safety arrangements.

The incident occurred during the night of February 5–6, when the victim was returning home after finishing his work shift. Because the pit was uncovered and there were no safety measures in place, he fell into the trench and sustained fatal injuries.

The tragedy sparked outrage among residents and raised serious questions about negligence during public infrastructure work.

Contractor Was Evading Arrest

Police said the contractor had been on the run for several weeks following the accident. After conducting a technical surveillance and investigation, several police teams tracked his location to Udaipur in Rajasthan.

A special team from the West District eventually located and arrested him during an early-morning operation.

Officials said the contractor had been hiding in the city to avoid arrest after his anticipatory bail plea was rejected by the court.

Court Sends Contractor to Judicial Custody

Following his arrest, the accused was produced before a Delhi court. The court remanded him to judicial custody as the investigation continues.

Police officials said the case involves serious charges including culpable homicide, criminal conspiracy, and destruction of evidence due to alleged negligence in leaving the pit uncovered.

Earlier Arrests and Investigation

Before the arrest of the main contractor, the police had already detained sub-contractor Rajesh Kumar Prajapati, and a labourer named Yogesh in connection with the case.

Investigators found that the workers and contractors allegedly knew about the accident but failed to immediately inform authorities or take steps to rescue the victim.

Police also suspect that attempts were made to cover the site and conceal evidence after the incident.

Questions Over Safety Negligence

The tragic death has once again highlighted the issue of safety negligence during civic construction projects in the capital. Authorities and courts have emphasized that public roads cannot be turned into “death traps” due to lack of basic safety measures.

Residents and civic groups have demanded stricter monitoring of infrastructure work to prevent similar accidents in the future.
