Jasprit Bumrah Ruled Out of Sri Lanka Test Series Due to Knee Injury
August 2, 2026
New Delhi: India have suffered a major setback ahead of the upcoming two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, with star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah ruled out due to a left knee injury.
According to reports, Bumrah continues to experience discomfort in his left knee despite undergoing rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE). Medical experts have advised against rushing his return, with the focus firmly on his long-term fitness.
BCCI Opts for Cautious Approach
Bumrah had initially been included in India’s squad for the Sri Lanka tour, subject to fitness clearance. However, after his latest medical assessment, the team management decided not to risk the premier pacer for the two-Test series, which begins on August 15 in Galle.
The decision comes after Bumrah sustained an impact injury to his left knee during the ODI series against England. Although he resumed rehabilitation, he has not recovered sufficiently to return to competitive cricket.
Big Blow for India’s Pace Attack
Bumrah’s absence leaves India without its most experienced fast bowler for a crucial away Test series. The responsibility is now expected to fall on the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, while the selectors may consider an additional pace option as cover.
The Indian team management is believed to be prioritising Bumrah’s recovery with an eye on the remainder of the international season and the World Test Championship cycle.
The first Test between India and Sri Lanka will be played in Galle from August 15, followed by the second Test in Colombo from August 23.
