Jawaharlal Nehru was born in Allahabad on November 14, 1889. He received his early education at home before travelling to England for higher studies. He studied at Harrow and later at Cambridge University, where he completed his studies in Natural Sciences. He subsequently qualified as a barrister from the Inner Temple in London before returning to India in 1912.
Major Role in India’s Freedom Struggle
After returning to India, Nehru became actively involved in the freedom movement. Influenced deeply by Mahatma Gandhi after meeting him in 1916, he participated in several major movements, including the Non-Cooperation Movement, Salt Satyagraha, and Quit India Movement. He was imprisoned multiple times during the struggle for independence and played a key role in shaping the Congress party’s demand for complete independence.
India’s First Prime Minister
In 1929, Nehru became President of the Lahore Session of the Indian National Congress, where complete independence was declared the party’s ultimate goal. Following India’s independence in 1947, he became the country’s first Prime Minister and served for nearly 17 years. Nehru passed away on May 27, 1964, after suffering a heart attack. His birthday, November 14, is celebrated every year as Children’s Day in India.
