JD(U) Distances from KC Tyagi’s Bharat Ratna Pitch for Nitish

Senior politician K.C. Tyagi stirred political debate by publicly urging Prime Minister Narendra Modi to confer the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. In a letter addressed to the Prime Minister, Tyagi described Nitish Kumar as a “precious gem of the socialist movement” whose long political career and contribution to governance, social justice and women’s empowerment make him deserve of the honour, drawing parallels with past recipients like Chaudhary Charan Singh and Karpoori Thakur.

JD(U) Keeps Distance, Calls Tyagi’s Remarks Personal

However, the Janata Dal (United) has clearly distanced itself from Tyagi’s pitch, insisting that his comments were “purely personal” and do not represent the party’s official position. JD(U) national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad clarified that Tyagi’s statements are not in line with party ideology and that many within the party are unsure whether he remains active in current affairs. Party leaders emphasised that no formal decision has been taken by the JD(U) on the Bharat Ratna proposal for Nitish Kumar.

JD(U) Minister Ashok Choudhary echoed this stance, reinforcing that there has been no party resolution regarding the honour and that Tyagi’s views should not be construed as the party’s stand.

Support from Jitan Ram Manjhi

Meanwhile, Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi welcomed the idea on social media, saying it would be “wonderful” if Nitish Kumar were awarded the Bharat Ratna. Manjhi urged Prime Minister Modi to consider the feat, expressing confidence that the honour would reflect Nitish’s stature and legacy in national politics.

Political Context Ahead of Bihar Activities

The Bharat Ratna discussion gains prominence as Nitish Kumar, one of India’s longest-serving chief ministers, continues to play a central role in Bihar’s political dynamics, including an upcoming statewide yatra where he will highlight governance achievements. While Tyagi’s proposal has sparked conversation, the JD(U)’s official distancing suggests the party may prefer to avoid premature elevation of the issue ahead of broader political priorities.
