Jeevan Kundu Murder Case: Govt Accepts Demands After CM Saini Meeting, Family To Hold Last Rites After 14 Days

Hisar: The Haryana government has accepted the demands raised by the Nyay Sangharsh Samiti in connection with the murder of Jeevan Kundu following a meeting with Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Monday. The development came after a Mahapanchayat was held in Hisar over the case.

The government has assured the committee of action for the arrest of prime accused Ramesh Attri. An agreement has also been reached on withdrawing cases registered in Hansi on August 15, returning seized vehicles and providing assistance to Jeevan Kundu’s family.

Following the assurances, the family agreed to conduct Jeevan Kundu’s last rites in Kinala, 14 days after his murder.

CM Saini assures action on key demands

Committee member and former sarpanch Ravi Kundu said all major demands raised during the talks had been accepted. Former BJP state general secretary Surendra Poonia reportedly mediated the discussions and accompanied committee members to Chandigarh for the meeting with the Chief Minister.

The committee had earlier warned that if the meeting with the Chief Minister failed to produce a solution, the Hisar-Delhi, Hisar-Sirsa and Hisar-Chandigarh national highways would be blocked from August 18.

With the government accepting the demands, the proposed highway blockade has been averted for now.

Hansi protest escalated on August 15

The Jeevan Kundu case had also become linked to the confrontation between protesters and police in Hansi on August 15.

According to the FIR, around 150–200 people reached the Sisaye Bridge checkpoint at around 6:40 a.m. in tractor-trolleys and other vehicles before Chief Minister Saini’s district-level Independence Day flag-hoisting ceremony at Nehru College.

Police and administrative officials, including Executive Magistrate Udaiveer Jhajharia, DSP (Crime) Ravindra Sangwan and SHO Sukhjit Singh, attempted to stop the protesters from moving towards the venue, according to the police account.

The situation escalated after protesters allegedly broke through barricades, pelted stones and attempted to move tractors towards police personnel. The Duty Magistrate subsequently authorised a lathi-charge to disperse the crowd.

Several police personnel, including Hansi SP Vinod Kumar, were injured during the confrontation. Police later registered cases against people allegedly involved in the violence.

Opposition, farmers’ body raise questions over police conduct

The events in Hansi have also triggered criticism from opposition leaders and farmers’ organisations.

Congress MP Deepender Singh Hooda said the alleged brandishing of an AK-47 by Hansi CIA In-charge Kaptan Singh, clashes and the alleged involvement of senior police officers in stone-pelting raised questions about law and order. He called for an impartial, high-level inquiry into the incident and the conduct of the police officials involved.

INLD leader Digvijay Chautala also criticised the conduct of the police and questioned the presence of an officer allegedly carrying an AK-47 while not wearing a uniform.

The Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) alleged that police officers in plain clothes attempted to fire shots from an AK-47 and claimed that orders regarding police personnel remaining in uniform during protests were not followed. These allegations have not been independently established.

Police, meanwhile, have maintained that the force acted after the protesters allegedly became violent and attempted to breach barricades and threaten personnel.

The latest agreement between the Haryana government and the Nyay Sangharsh Samiti is expected to bring down tensions surrounding the Jeevan Kundu murder case, with the family now set to conduct his last rites.
