J&K MMU Objects to Vande Mataram Singing Competition Publicity

Srinagar, Dec 31, 2025 – The Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), an umbrella body of major Muslim religious organizations in Jammu & Kashmir, has strongly objected to government publicity and promotion of a Vande Mataram-themed singing competition, saying it conflicts with Islamic beliefs and religious freedom.

 What the MMU Says

The MMU, led by cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, condemned a recent directive from the J&K Department of Culture that encouraged schools and institutions to organize musical and cultural events centered on the national song Vande Mataram, marking its 150th anniversary.

According to the group, reciting or singing ‘Vande Mataram’ is “un-Islamic”, as the song contains expressions of devotion that contradict the Islamic belief in the absolute oneness of Allah (Tawheed). They argued that mandating participation from students and staff could be coercive and violate religious freedom.

The MMU has urged the Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to withdraw the directive immediately and ensure that no student or institution is compelled to take part in such events against their faith.

 Religious Freedom and Cultural Celebrations

MMU’s objection reflects wider debate in the region about balancing cultural nationalism with respect for religious diversity. They said patriotism can be expressed through service, compassion and societal contribution, not through acts that may conflict with religious principles.
