J&K can become a national model for fisheries development: Manoj Sinha

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir can become a model for the country for the holistic development of the fisheries sector, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha said while addressing the National Cold Water Fisheries Conference held in Srinagar.

The conference was organized by the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, and was attended by several policymakers, experts, and stakeholders, including Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh.

Increase in Fish Production and Infrastructure

Sinha said that fish production and infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir have increased significantly in the last few years. He said that the government is working to empower fish farmers and strengthen the value chain of the fisheries sector, which will increase employment and income.

He informed that approximately ₹233 crore has been allocated for the fisheries sector under the Holistic Agriculture Development Programme launched in 2022. This has promoted hatcheries, trout farming, and other value-addition activities.

Trout production is projected to increase from 1,663 tons in 2021-22 to 2,650 tons in 2024-25, while the number of private trout units, hatcheries, and biofloc units has also increased rapidly.

Emphasis on Sustainable Development and Innovation

The Lieutenant Governor also expressed gratitude to the Central Government for the Integrated Aqua Park to be established at Anantnag at a cost of ₹100 crore. He said this will increase fish production, promote coldwater fisheries, and create new employment opportunities.

Referring to challenges such as climate change, rising water temperatures, water scarcity, and fish health, he emphasized the importance of scientific research, development of improved species, and the use of modern technology.

Model guidelines for the development of coldwater fisheries were also released during the conference, and several fish farmer producer organizations, progressive fish farmers, and start-ups were honored.
