Srinagar/New Delhi: The Jammu and Kashmir Students Association (JKSA) has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Government of India to urgently intervene to ensure the safety, support and possible evacuation of Indian students studying in Iran amid escalating tensions following recent geopolitical developments. In a letter to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the association highlighted concerns over security, academic disruptions and personal safety of students caught in the uncertainty.
The appeal comes against the backdrop of a tense situation in the region following conflict escalation and safety advisories issued by the Indian Embassy in Tehran, which has urged Indian nationals to consider leaving the country at the earliest. Many Indian students, including a significant number from Jammu and Kashmir, say they are caught between following critical academic schedules and heeding safety advisories.
According to the JKSA representation, several crucial medical examinations including Iran-wide national exams are scheduled in early March, which Indian medical students must sit to progress in their studies. The association noted that students are hesitant to leave the country due to these mandatory tests, which could affect their academic progression and future careers if missed.
Students and families have told JKSA that despite the evolving security situation and official advisories to leave Iran, universities have indicated little likelihood of postponing exams. In light of this, the association urged the government to engage with Iranian universities and authorities to explore flexible academic arrangements, including the possibility of postponement or alternative arrangements for students wishing to return home.
The letter to the MEA emphasized that anxiety and concern among students and their families are growing. Although commercial flights are still operating and day-to-day life continues in many areas, the uncertain security environment has left many feeling uneasy about remaining in Iran while debates over regional stability unfold.
The JKSA underscored that clear and structured guidance from the Indian government is crucial to reduce confusion and help students make informed decisions. The association also offered to assist authorities in communicating verified information and coordinating with students on the ground.
Representatives of the association noted that many students are balancing their academic responsibilities with legitimate safety fears, and that government engagement could help provide the clarity and assurance students and families sorely need.
The Indian Embassy in Tehran has already issued advisories urging Indian nationals, including students, to consider leaving the country amid ongoing regional instability. This advisory was cited by JKSA as a responsible measure, but the association wants further diplomatic action to facilitate evacuations, particularly for students with pressing academic commitments.
JKSA’s request includes urging the MEA to engage with Iranian authorities and universities to consider exam schedules and safe exit options, so that students do not have to choose between safety and academic continuity.
Such diplomatic engagement, the association believes, could ensure that students have both security and academic progression, and would reflect India’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad amid challenging situations.
The appeal by JKSA underscores wider concerns about Indian nationals in Iran, where multiple thousand students are enrolled, with many belonging to medical and professional courses. Families back home are closely following updates, sharing anxieties about possible escalations in the geopolitical climate.
As tensions linger and security advisories remain in place, the call for proactive intervention from the Government of India reflects the urgency felt by student groups and families alike, who hope for a clear roadmap to ensure student safety without jeopardizing their academic futures.
