JKNC MLAs Protest in J&K Assembly Over Killing of Iranian Supreme Leader

Jammu & Kashmir:  Members of the National Conference (JKNC) staged demonstrations on March 27, both inside and outside the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, to show solidarity with Iran following the killing of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

JKNC Voices Condemnation of Attack

JKNC MLA Tanvir Sadiq stated that the party and the J&K government stand united with Iran. He emphasised that no country has the right to attack another and urged India’s top leadership to condemn the incident. “We are supporting the people of Iran. Just like CM Omar Abdullah condemned the killing earlier, today the entire National Conference and government of J&K are standing in solidarity,” Sadiq told reporters.

CM Omar Abdullah’s Earlier Statement

Earlier, on March 7, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the ongoing conflict in West Asia, saying that regime change cannot be achieved through aerial bombardment. He described the killing of Khamenei as a “gross misuse of force and violation of international law” and stressed that only the citizens of a country have the right to choose their leadership.

Rising Tensions and Global Impact

Tensions escalated in West Asia after the joint US-Israel strikes on February 28 killed 86-year-old Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with several senior Iranian leaders. In retaliation, Iran launched strikes on US bases in Gulf countries and Israel. The conflict also worsened the global energy crisis, as Iran imposed a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage transporting nearly one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and gas.
