Jodhpur: 9-Year-Old Boy Dies After 39-Hour Borewell Rescue Operation

Jodhpur: A nine-year-old boy who fell into a borewell in Rajasthan’s Jodhpur died on Saturday after rescue teams brought him out following a 39-hour operation. He was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

The child fell into the borewell on Friday afternoon while playing near farmland where his father, Pacharam, works as a farmer. According to police, a water pump was being repaired at the site after it malfunctioned, and its pipes had been removed when the boy accidentally fell into the borewell.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Bhawani Singh said police received information about the incident at around 1 pm on Friday. Senior police and administrative officials reached the spot, and rescue teams were mobilised.

NDRF, SDRF Teams Join Rescue Effort

Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Civil Defence and the district administration worked through the night to rescue the child.

NDRF Assistant Commandant Praveen Kumar said the team left Ajmer at around 2 pm on Friday and reached the site at approximately 8 pm. The team immediately joined the operation, which was already underway with local rescue personnel.

Kumar said the borewell was around 1,050 feet deep, with the child trapped at an estimated depth of 610 feet.

Child Appeared Unconscious During Last Observation

During the operation, rescuers used a camera to monitor the child inside the borewell. Kumar said the child appeared to be unconscious during the last observation, with no visible movement. He added that only a medical officer could assess the child’s actual condition.

Despite the continuous efforts of the rescue teams, the boy could not be saved. He was finally brought out on Saturday after nearly 39 hours and taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers posed by open or inadequately secured borewells, particularly in areas where children may be playing nearby.
