Tensions Rise in Joshimath Over Namaz in Govt Building

Joshimath (Uttarakhand): Tensions have escalated in the Meat Bazaar area of Joshimath town after a video showing namaz being offered inside an under-construction government building went viral on social media, prompting objections from local groups.

The building in question part of a municipal facility being developed as a table-tennis hall became the focal point of the controversy when people were seen offering prayers inside its hall.

    Local Objections and Communal Sensitivities

Following the video’s circulation, Hindu organizations and locals raised objections, questioning the alleged use of a public government building for religious activity unrelated to its intended purpose. Some groups warned of protests if the matter was not addressed.

Protesters also submitted memorandums to local authorities urging action and clarity on how the site was used for prayer.

Authorities Step in to Maintain Peace

Officials, including the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Chandrashekhar Vashishtha, convened a meeting with representatives of both communities as a precautionary measure to maintain peace and harmony in the sensitive situation.

Police have been instructed to remain vigilant against any elements attempting to disturb the atmosphere, and authorities stressed the importance of communal harmony and law and order.

     Permission Withdrawn and Premises Secured

The municipality reportedly withdrew the verbal permission that had been given for the prayers and locked the hall to prevent further use for such activities. This step was taken after the video sparked local objections and concerns about the appropriateness of using the site for religious purposes.

Officials continued to appeal for peaceful coexistence and restraint from all sides as the matter is resolved.
