DIG Bhullar’s Judicial Custody Extended by 14 Days; Vigilance Bureau Allowed to Interrogate Him Inside Burail Jail

Former Punjab Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harcharan Singh Bhullar, who was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in a bribery case, has not received any relief from the court.

As his 14-day judicial custody concluded today, Bhullar was produced before the CBI court through video conferencing (VC).

The court has granted permission to the Vigilance Bureau to interrogate DIG H.S. Bhullar inside Burail Jail.

Mohali’s Chief Judicial Magistrate, Megha Dhaliwal, today approved an application filed by the Vigilance Bureau seeking permission to question the arrested DIG within the jail premises.

According to Vigilance sources, DSP Vishwajit Singh Mann, along with his team, is currently inside Burail Jail and is holding a detailed round of questioning with Bhullar.

The interrogation reportedly pertains to financial irregularities and alleged misuse of official position during Bhullar’s tenure. Officials said the questioning could continue for several hours, depending on the information extracted during the session.

Further developments in the case are awaited.

CBI Court Orders Further Detention

After reviewing the case proceedings, the CBI court has decided to extend Bhullar’s judicial custody by another 14 days, continuing his detention in connection with the ongoing bribery probe.

How did he acquire so much property despite his low income?

The CBI has been investigating the bribery case for a long time, and now the scope of its investigation has expanded to include the acquisition of property by the former DIG from 2017 to the present. According to the CBI investigation, Bhullar’s salary income from August 1 to October 17 was ₹4.74 lakh.

The CBI found that Bhullar’s annual income from all known sources was ₹45.95 lakh, according to his income tax returns filed for the financial year 2024–25. However, the value of the seized properties and family assets is estimated to be several crores of rupees.

The CBI stated that Bhullar, in collusion with unknown persons, amassed wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income and illegally enriched himself during his tenure. He also failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for the seized properties.
