Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal Sworn In as 44th Chief Justice of Rajasthan HC

Jaipur: Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal, formerly a judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court, was sworn in as the 44th Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court at a ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Jaipur on Monday.

Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde administered the oath of office in the presence of senior judicial officers, government representatives and top administrative officials.

Following the oath-taking ceremony, Justice Agrawal signed the warrant of appointment issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan, formally completing the process of assuming charge as the new Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.

Top Leadership Attends Swearing-In Ceremony

Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma, Deputy Chief Ministers Diya Kumari and Premchand Bairwa, several state ministers and all judges of the Rajasthan High Court attended the ceremony.

Rajasthan Chief Secretary V. Srinivas was also present. The ceremony also saw the presence of outgoing Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma, whose tenure had been at the centre of controversy in recent months.

With the formal assumption of office, Justice Agrawal will now oversee the judicial and administrative functioning of the Rajasthan High Court. As Chief Justice, he will have a key role in the allocation of judicial responsibilities, administrative supervision and the smooth functioning of the court.

Appointment Comes Amid Controversy Over Acting Chief Justice

Justice Agrawal’s appointment comes at a significant time for the Rajasthan High Court following developments surrounding the office of the Acting Chief Justice.

Supreme Court Justice Sandeep Mehta had recently written to Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, seeking Justice Sharma’s transfer out of Rajasthan and the appointment of a regular Chief Justice from another High Court.

Justice Mehta had raised allegations concerning Justice Sharma’s exercise of administrative powers and the listing of cases. The controversy also triggered protests by lawyers at both the Jaipur and Jodhpur benches of the Rajasthan High Court.

Lawyers had demanded that Justice Sharma be divested of his charge as Acting Chief Justice. Justice Sharma, who is set to retire later this month, has denied the allegations against him.

Justice Agrawal Begins Tenure as Rajasthan HC Chief Justice

The swearing-in ceremony at Raj Bhavan formally marked the beginning of Justice Agrawal’s tenure as the 44th Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.

His appointment assumes added significance as the court moves forward following the recent controversy involving its previous acting leadership. Justice Agrawal will now take charge of the court’s judicial administration and day-to-day functioning.
