Cash Discovery Row: Justice Yashwant Varma Resigns from Allahabad HC

Justice Yashwant Verma, currently posted at the Allahabad High Court, has resigned. An internal inquiry was underway against him regarding the discovery of a large quantity of burnt currency notes at his residence in Delhi.

Additionally, there was talk of impeachment proceedings. Amidst these developments, he has tendered his resignation from the post. Following the discovery of the burnt cash at his Delhi home, he had been transferred to the Allahabad High Court.

He had taken the oath of office on April 5, 2025. He had been temporarily relieved of his judicial duties. A committee has been constituted to look into the matter of initiating impeachment proceedings against him.

Several Members of Parliament had submitted notices in Parliament seeking Justice Verma’s removal. Currently, an internal inquiry committee is conducting an investigation into the allegations against Justice Verma.

In his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Justice Yashwant Verma wrote: “Although I do not wish to burden your esteemed office with the reasons necessitating the submission of this letter, it is nonetheless with profound anguish that I hereby tender my resignation from the office of Judge of the Allahabad High Court, with immediate effect. It has been an honor for me to serve in this capacity.”
