Kabaddi Player’s Murder in Mohali: Three Punjab Gang Members Arrested from Howrah Station

Kolkata: Three members of a notorious gang from Punjab have been arrested from the Howrah station area, police said on Monday, in connection with the murder of a kabaddi player in Punjab on December 15.

According to Howrah City Police sources, the three were apprehended by a team from the Golabari police station on Saturday night. The arrested individuals have been identified as Karan Pathak, Tarandeep Singh and Akashdeep Singh, all residents of Punjab.

Accused on the Run Since December Killing

Police sources said that the three, who are involved in organised crime in Punjab, have several criminal cases against them. The Punjab Police Special Task Force (STF) had been searching for them ever since the murder of the kabaddi player in December.

After the crime, the accused reportedly fled Punjab and travelled to Kolkata via Gangtok to lie low. However, they were allegedly planning to escape again and were preparing to board a train from Howrah station on Sunday night to move to another location.

Inter-State Operation Leads to Arrests

Upon receiving intelligence inputs, the Punjab STF contacted the Golabari police station. Acting on the tip-off, the Howrah City Police maintained heightened vigilance and identified the suspects at the station premises late at night, leading to their arrest.

Initially, the accused told police that they were members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang. However, Punjab Police sources said this claim was made to mislead investigators and that the trio actually belongs to a rival gang. Further investigations are underway to determine their exact network and role in the crime.

Murder Linked to Gang Rivalry and Sidhu Moosewala Case

It may be recalled that last month, a social media post claimed responsibility for the killing of kabaddi player Rana Balachauria in Mohali, calling it “revenge” for the murder of singer Sidhu Moosewala.

An Instagram reel, allegedly posted by a smaller gang reportedly linked to the Bambiha gang, stated in Punjabi that the attack was carried out to avenge Moosewala’s 2022 murder. The post also alleged that Rana Balachauria had links with the Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria gangs.

Rana Balachauria, a kabaddi player and sports event promoter, was attending a local tournament in Mohali’s Sohana area when unidentified assailants opened fire, killing him on the spot. His real name was Kanwar Digvijay Singh.
