Jagraon: A shocking incident took place in Jagraon, Ludhiana (Punjab) late on Friday night when Kabaddi player Tejpal was shot dead in front of his father, who was just 250 metres away from the SSP office. According to police reports, the accused first beat Tejpal and then shot him in the chest.
The deceased was the only son of his family. The police have registered a case against 12 people, including Honey, Kala, Gagan and several unidentified men.
Eyewitness statement: Beaten up and shot in front of father
Tejpal’s father Raghuveer Singh told the police that he and his son had gone to an oil mill with his friend Pralabh Singh to buy fodder for cattle. While they were loading the sacks, the accused Honey started abusing Tejpal and his friend. After some time, Honey’s brother Kala arrived with several others, and a fight broke out.
During the altercation, Honey pulled out a weapon from his backpack and shot Tejpal in the chest, and immediately fled the scene. Tejpal was taken to the Civil Hospital, Jagraon, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Motive linked to earlier argument
Investigation revealed that about three weeks ago, Tejpal’s friend Pralabh Singh had an argument with Honey and his associates when they harassed his wife and sister while they were shopping. The incident allegedly sparked enmity that led to Tejpal’s murder.
Police register case against 12 accused
On the complaint of Raghuveer Singh, the police have registered a case against Honey, Kala, Gagan and 8-9 unidentified persons.
Three police teams including DSP, CIA staff and officers of the local police station have been formed to trace the accused. Raids were conducted in several areas, including the accused’s village, but they were absconding.
SSP Jagraon has also alerted surrounding districts to help in the investigation.
Responsibility for Facebook post exposed
In a shocking twist, a youth named Jassu Koom took responsibility for the murder in a Facebook post, saying that he and his brother Brar committed the murder due to personal enmity. Police confirmed that they are verifying the authenticity of the post and said that a detailed investigation is being conducted into the matter.

Tejpal’s grieving mother has refused to perform his last rites until the family gets justice. “We will not perform the last rites until my son gets justice,” she said.
Meanwhile, the body has been kept at the Civil Hospital in Jagraon, where a post-mortem will be conducted.
