In a high-profile development in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, a luxury Lamborghini Revuelto seized after it was involved in a serious road crash earlier this month has been released from police custody after the owner furnished a hefty bail bond of ₹8.30 crore. The vehicle had been impounded since the accident, which left six people injured on VIP Road.
On Friday, the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court here directed that the Lamborghini a high-end Italian supercar be returned to its owner following submission of the bond and a formal undertaking to the court. Before issuing the order, the bench examined a mechanical and technical report submitted by the police and expert evaluators as part of the legal process.
The luxury vehicle, which costs an estimated ₹10 – ₹12 crore, had been held at the Gwaltoli police station since it was seized after the crash on 8 February. During the hearing, the court also set conditions that the car must not be sold, transferred or tampered with while the investigation continues.
The incident occurred in the afternoon when the Lamborghini allegedly rammed into an autorickshaw and a motorcycle before crashing into an electric pole on VIP Road, an often-busy stretch in the city. Footage from the site reportedly showed the rider of the motorcycle being thrown several feet after the collision.
Preliminary police investigations and CCTV evidence identified Shivam Mishra, son of tobacco businessman KK Mishra, as the person behind the wheel at the time of the accident. Eyewitness accounts corroborated this, though Mishra’s legal team has disputed the allegations, suggesting that a chauffeur was driving the vehicle instead.
Following the crash, authorities registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched an investigation into charges including negligent and rash driving, endangering lives, and causing hurt by dangerous means. The severity of the collision and the high value of the vehicle added to public attention around the case.
Shivam Mishra was arrested four days after the accident and subsequently granted bail by a local court on a personal bond of ₹20,000. Despite his release, the Lamborghini itself remained impounded as part of the ongoing inquiry, until the recent court order for its return upon the filing of the substantial bond.
As part of the release conditions, the magistrate’s court has required that the Lamborghini’s owner must present the car whenever called upon by authorities during the investigation and avoid any modification or transfer of the vehicle. This ensures that the car remains available for possible inspections throughout the legal process.
The case has drawn widespread attention in Uttar Pradesh and beyond due to questions surrounding VIP justice, accountability, and road safety in a major urban centre. With the car now out of police custody, attention will turn to continuing investigations and any further legal proceedings related to the crash and its aftermath.
