Kanwar Yatra Tragedy: Two Kanwariyas Killed as Speeding Truck Runs Them Over in Haryana’s Yamunanagar

Yamunanagar, August 8: Two Kanwariyas were killed after an unidentified speeding truck allegedly ran them over on the Radaur-Kurukshetra road near Ghodag village in Haryana’s Yamunanagar district late Thursday night. The victims were returning to their hometown in Jind after collecting holy water from Haridwar as part of the Kanwar Yatra.

The deceased were identified as Sachin (21), son of Shamsher Singh, and Ajay Kumar alias Kala (21), son of Bira Ram. Both were residents of Morpatti Mohalla in Narwana, Jind district. Police have registered a case against the unidentified truck driver, who fled the scene after the accident.

Truck hit devotees from behind while returning from Haridwar

According to the complaint lodged by Vikram Kumar, he, Sachin, Ajay and several other devotees had travelled to Haridwar on August 3 to collect holy water and were walking back to Narwana.

At around 11 p.m., when the group reached near Ghodag village on the Radaur-Kurukshetra road, a truck coming from the Yamunanagar side allegedly struck Sachin and Ajay from behind at high speed. The impact threw both men onto the road, and the truck ran over them before speeding away.

Vikram managed to escape by jumping to the side of the road and immediately alerted the emergency services through Dial-112.

Declared dead at hospital; police launch investigation

Police and an ambulance reached the spot soon after receiving the information and shifted the injured to the Civil Hospital in Yamunanagar. However, doctors declared both youths dead on arrival.

The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination and later handed over to the families. Based on Vikram’s complaint, Yamunanagar Sadar Police have registered a case against the unidentified truck driver. Investigators are scanning CCTV footage from nearby areas and searching for the absconding accused.

One victim was married four months ago

The tragedy has left the families and residents of Narwana in deep shock. Sachin had been married just four months ago and was the only son in his family, while Ajay was the younger of two brothers and worked in agriculture.

Family members said both youths were undertaking the Kanwar Yatra for the first time. Their sudden deaths have cast a pall of gloom over the entire locality.

Authorities said further investigation into the hit-and-run case is underway.
