A notorious criminal, who had been captured after being wounded in a police encounter, escaped from the government hospital around midnight on Thursday. Only the criminal’s handcuffs were found on his hospital bed. The accused was charged with attempting to rob a petrol pump in Taraori by opening fire, and he was reportedly a wanted fugitive across five states, including Haryana. The moment news of the accused’s escape broke, it caused a massive stir within the entire police department; police teams are now conducting continuous raids in an intensive search for him.
Gurjit Singh, a resident of Kharar village in Punjab, was arrested by a CIA-1 team on May 25 following a search operation that spanned approximately 23 days. He was apprehended during an encounter near the Augmentation Canal on Meerut Road. During the exchange of fire, the accused sustained a gunshot wound to his leg near the hip, following which he was admitted to the government hospital in Karnal for treatment. The police also recovered a pistol and a motorcycle without a license plate from the scene of the encounter.
On Thursday, four police personnel were deployed outside the hospital’s Prisoners’ Ward to keep the accused under surveillance. Despite these security measures, the accused managed to evade the police and escape from the hospital late at night, around 12:00 AM. As soon as the news reached senior police officials, it triggered a state of chaos within the department. Senior police officers immediately rushed to the hospital, and an investigation into the entire incident has been initiated.
