New Delhi: The Government of Karnataka is considering banning mobile phone use for students under 16. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has initiated discussions with university Vice Chancellors on the issue.
At a meeting of the Karnataka State Higher Education Council, he stated that the proposal is under consideration and the opinions of all Vice Chancellors are being sought. He expressed concern over the growing problem of social media addiction and drug abuse.
Emphasis on the safety of minor students
The Chief Minister clarified that if any decision is taken, it will only apply to minor students, not adult students. He also directed university administrations to maintain a drug-free campus.
According to officials, the government is concerned about the increasing impact of smartphones and social media on children’s mental health, behavior, and studies. No final decision has been taken at this time.
Digital Detox and Responsible Technology Use
State IT Minister Priyank Kharge previously told the Assembly that the government is considering steps to address the impact of digital platforms on minors.
He said that Karnataka, in collaboration with Meta, has launched a “Digital Detox” program, involving approximately 300,000 students and 100,000 teachers.
Similar regulations are in place in many countries
Many countries around the world have implemented age-based restrictions on social media for children. Australia has enacted a law banning social media for children under 16. France and Denmark have also set limits for teenagers, while Finland and the United Kingdom are considering it.
