Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti resigned, saying, “I don’t know why the Congress asked me to step down.”

Bengaluru: Karnataka Legislative Council Chairman Basavaraj Horatti resigned from his post on Thursday. After resigning, he said he didn’t understand why the Congress asked him to step down.

Speaking to the media, Horatti said that he conducted the House’s proceedings impartially and in accordance with the rules throughout his tenure. He said he still doesn’t understand the reason for the Congress’s demand for his resignation.

Horatti said, “I don’t know why the Congress asked me to resign. I have always conducted the House’s proceedings impartially and in accordance with the rules.”

His resignation comes at a time when political activity is rife in the Karnataka Legislative Council and the ruling Congress party has been demanding a change in the position of Chairman.

Horatti, one of Karnataka’s most senior MLAs, said he decided to step down out of respect for democratic traditions. He also clarified that he holds no resentment towards anyone.

With Horatti’s resignation, the way has been cleared for the election of a new Chairman of the Karnataka Legislative Council.
