Karnataka Power Huddle: CM Siddaramaiah May Resign Tomorrow
May 27, 2026
A major political development is unfolding in Karnataka as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is reportedly considering stepping down from his post following intense discussions with the Congress high command in New Delhi. Sources indicate that Siddaramaiah has sought time from Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot, fuelling speculation that a leadership transition could take place as early as Thursday.
High-Level Meetings Trigger Exit Buzz
The political buzz intensified after marathon meetings between Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, and the Congress leadership in Delhi. According to reports, the Congress leadership is attempting to resolve the long-running power-sharing tussle within the state unit.
Sources quoted in multiple reports claimed that Siddaramaiah has been asked to consider stepping aside to make way for Shivakumar. In return, the Congress leadership is said to have offered Siddaramaiah a Rajya Sabha berth and a larger organisational role at the national level.
However, Congress leaders publicly continue to deny any crisis. The party has officially stated that there is “no reality” to reports of a leadership tussle and maintained that discussions were focused on organisational and electoral matters.
Siddaramaiah Calls Key Meeting
Amid mounting speculation, Siddaramaiah reportedly convened a breakfast meeting with loyalists and senior ministers at his Bengaluru residence. Several ministers and Congress leaders were seen arriving at the Chief Minister’s residence as political uncertainty gripped the state.
Reports suggest that the Chief Minister may take a final decision after consultations with his close aides and supporters. Congress leader Satish Jarkiholi also hinted that clarity on the leadership issue could emerge soon.
Meanwhile, there is speculation that Shivakumar could formally take over as Chief Minister if Siddaramaiah resigns. Sources also claim that a broader political formula is being worked out to balance caste equations and power-sharing within the Karnataka Congress.
BJP Attacks Congress Over Crisis
The Bharatiya Janata Party has sharply criticised the Congress over the unfolding political drama. BJP leaders accused the Congress of destabilising Karnataka for internal political interests and raised questions over the treatment of Siddaramaiah, who is considered one of the tallest OBC leaders in the state.
The BJP also alleged that the Congress government was distracted by infighting while governance issues remained unaddressed. Political observers believe the developments could significantly impact Karnataka’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
Leadership Change May Reshape Karnataka Politics
If Siddaramaiah steps down, it will mark one of the most significant political transitions in Karnataka since the Congress returned to power in 2023. The leadership change could also redefine internal equations within the state Congress and influence the party’s strategy at the national level.
For now, all eyes remain on Bengaluru and Delhi as the Congress leadership prepares for what could become a major political reshuffle in Karnataka.
