Bengaluru, July 10: Karnataka Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has directed officials to install 24×7 CCTV cameras in all major temples managed by the state’s Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments (Muzrai) Department following the alleged donation theft case at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
The Chief Minister said the surveillance system will function as a precautionary measure to improve transparency in the handling of devotees’ offerings and prevent any irregularities in temple administration. The directive comes amid the ongoing investigation into the alleged embezzlement of donations collected at the Ayodhya Ram Temple.
CCTV to monitor donation handling
Shivakumar instructed officials to ensure that CCTV cameras cover every critical area of the temples, including donation boxes, locations where offerings are opened, cash-counting rooms, and entry and exit points. He also said the cameras should remain operational round the clock.
According to the Chief Minister, the surveillance network should be linked to the offices of the Superintendent of Police (SP), Circle Inspector and Deputy Commissioner, allowing authorities to monitor temple activities in real time.
CM cites Ayodhya donation controversy
Referring to the alleged irregularities at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Shivakumar said the reports had deeply hurt the sentiments of devotees who had contributed money, gold, silver and other valuables out of faith.
He said the Karnataka government wants to ensure such incidents do not occur in temples under its administration and has therefore ordered enhanced surveillance across major Muzrai temples.
Report sought on Karnataka links
When asked about allegations linking individuals from Karnataka to the Ayodhya donation theft case, the Chief Minister said he would seek an official report before commenting further. He added that while the allegations were under investigation, the state’s immediate priority was to strengthen safeguards in Karnataka’s temples.
Move aimed at improving transparency
The new CCTV system is expected to record the complete process of handling temple donations—from opening donation boxes to counting cash and securing the collections. Officials have been directed to begin the necessary arrangements for implementing the surveillance system across major temples managed by the Muzrai Department.
