Kashmir Tourism Worried as LPG Crisis Hits Hospitality

The tourism and hospitality sector in Kashmir is facing growing concerns as tensions and conflict in West Asia begin to affect the supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in India. The disruption in global energy supply chains, particularly shipping routes through the Gulf region, has caused a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders used by hotels and restaurants.

Industry stakeholders in Kashmir say the shortage comes at a crucial time when the region is preparing for the start of the spring tourist season. With major attractions like the famous tulip garden opening soon, tourism businesses fear that limited LPG supply could affect hospitality services for visitors.

    Hotels and Restaurants Express Concern

Hoteliers and restaurant owners across the Kashmir Valley have expressed concern over the supply situation. Commercial kitchens in hotels, restaurants, guesthouses and houseboats rely heavily on LPG for cooking. Any prolonged shortage could disrupt food services and operations during the tourist season.

Tourism stakeholders say they are closely monitoring the situation and have urged the government to ensure uninterrupted LPG supply. Without sufficient cooking gas, some establishments may struggle to serve large numbers of visitors or maintain normal operations.

Industry representatives warn that the crisis could affect service quality and increase operational costs for businesses that depend on a steady gas supply.

    Tourism Season Approaching in Kashmir

The concerns come just as Kashmir is preparing to welcome thousands of tourists from across India and abroad. Spring is considered one of the busiest tourism seasons in the Valley, attracting visitors to scenic destinations such as Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg.

Tourism has been a key economic driver for the region in recent years. According to government data, Jammu and Kashmir recorded more than 2.35 crore tourist visits in 2024, reflecting a major revival in the sector after several challenging years.

Local businesses including hotels, travel agencies, transport operators and handicraft sellers depend heavily on tourist arrivals during this period.

    Government Prioritising Domestic LPG Supply

Officials say the government has taken steps to manage the LPG supply crisis by prioritising domestic consumers. Authorities have asked refiners to increase LPG production and control the allocation of commercial cylinders in order to ensure cooking gas availability for households.

However, these restrictions have created difficulties for sectors such as hospitality, restaurants and small food businesses that rely on commercial LPG cylinders for daily operations.

Across India, the shortage has already forced some eateries to reduce menus or temporarily close operations due to a lack of cooking gas.

    Tourism Sector Seeks Government Support

Tourism stakeholders in Kashmir are now looking to the government for urgent intervention. They have urged authorities to ensure adequate LPG supply for hotels, restaurants and tourism facilities, particularly during the peak travel season.

Industry bodies believe timely action could prevent disruptions to the hospitality sector and protect the region’s tourism-driven economy. If the LPG shortage persists, it could potentially impact visitor experience and business revenues in the Valley.

    Uncertainty Remains Amid Global Tensions

The LPG supply challenges highlight how global geopolitical tensions can affect local economies dependent on tourism and hospitality. With the situation in West Asia still evolving, businesses in Kashmir are hoping for a quick resolution to avoid disruptions during one of the most important periods for tourism in the region.

For now, tourism operators remain cautiously optimistic while awaiting government measures to stabilize LPG supplies and ensure smooth operations during the upcoming tourist season.
