Washington: US President Donald Trump has dismissed White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia less than a week after she took up the position, following mounting scrutiny over her legal credentials and criticism of her first press briefing.
The departure came hours after Trump publicly said he had advised Zacharia to reconsider the demanding role, saying she had faced unfair treatment from the media.
Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said he believed Zacharia had been treated unfairly and noted that the media had been particularly harsh towards her.
“I told Katie in my opinion she was treated very unfairly,” Trump said, adding that she had been “brutalised by the media”.
He said he had told her there was no reason she had to continue facing such pressure and that, if he were in her position, he would reconsider the job.
President Trump is a kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and hardworking man. I wish more Americans appreciated him. No one will ever make America great the way he has and continues to.
It was an honor to work for him. https://t.co/Tp4NizrhE2

Legal Credentials Controversy Surrounds Zacharia
Questions about Zacharia’s professional background intensified after her first White House press briefing, which drew criticism and renewed attention to her repeated descriptions of herself as a lawyer.
Zacharia graduated from Pepperdine University in 2007 and earned her law degree from Pepperdine Caruso School of Law in 2011. However, she subsequently acknowledged that she had failed the California bar examination and had not retaken it.
The controversy gained momentum after the independent newsletter Popular Information reported that it could find no evidence that she had been admitted to practise law in any US state.
During an exchange with reporters earlier in the week, Trump was asked where Zacharia had passed the bar examination. He turned to her to respond, and her answer, “When I moved to China,” prompted further questions about her qualifications.
The White House subsequently shared a statement from Zacharia in which she said she had practised international transactional law with the appropriate credentials. Her law degree and her claim of having worked in international legal transactions became central to the debate over how she had presented her professional background.
First White House Briefing Drew Scrutiny
Trump announced Zacharia’s appointment after she had spent only a few months working at Trump Media & Technology Group. She had previously worked in communications and appeared as a commentator on conservative media outlets, including Fox News and Newsmax.
Her debut briefing brought immediate attention to her experience and preparedness for the role of the administration’s principal spokesperson. The questions surrounding her legal background further intensified the scrutiny during her first week.
White House Communications Director Steven Cheung defended Zacharia’s appointment, describing her as “uniquely qualified and whip smart” and expressing confidence in her ability to communicate the administration’s work to the American public.
Despite the criticism, the White House maintained its support for her professional capabilities during the controversy.
Zacharia Thanks Trump After Leaving the Role
Following her departure, Zacharia publicly praised Trump and described her time working for him as an honour.
In a post on X on October 17, she called the President “kind, wonderful, gracious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and hardworking” and said she wished more Americans appreciated him.
She also credited Trump with continuing to make America great and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve in his administration.
Zacharia’s departure ends one of the shortest tenures in the history of the White House press secretary’s office. The episode has drawn attention to the administration’s communications strategy, the intense scrutiny faced by its spokespersons and the importance of transparency around professional credentials.
