Kaushambi: Pickup truck packed with devotees crashes into trailer parked; eight dead, 17 injured

Eight people lost their lives in a tragic road accident on the Kanpur–Prayagraj Highway on Friday. Seventeen devotees were injured in the mishap. The accident occurred near the Dorma petrol pump within the Saini police station limits when a speeding pickup truck, having lost control, crashed into the rear of a trailer truck parked on the roadside.

The impact of the collision was so severe that the pickup truck was completely mangled, and screams of distress erupted among the passengers on board. The deceased include three children, three women, and two men.

All residents of Badokhar village

It is reported that approximately 25 people, including women and children, were traveling in the pickup truck. All of them are said to be residents of Badokhar village in the Malwan region of Fatehpur district.

They had traveled to Prayagraj on the occasion of Ram Navami to perform the mundan (first haircut) ceremony for a child. After taking a holy dip at the Sangam and completing the mundan rituals, they were returning to Fatehpur in the pickup truck when the accident occurred in the Saini area. The incident took place around 3:45 PM.

Chaos ensued at the scene following the accident. Hearing the cries of the injured on the road, locals rushed to offer assistance and alerted the police. Upon receiving the information, teams from the police and the health department arrived at the site.

Four ambulances were deployed to transport the injured to the hospital. Seven people succumbed to their injuries while being transported to the hospital, while the others are currently undergoing treatment. The accident caused a traffic jam on the highway for some time. The police have initiated an investigation into the matter.

Screams and cries continued to echo at the accident site in the aftermath of the crash. The damaged vehicle was removed from the road using a crane. Consequently, traffic movement on the highway remained disrupted for a period following the incident.
