“Where Is Amit Shah?” KC Venugopal Seeks Explanation Over Alleged Use of Pellet Guns, AK-47s Against Students

New Delhi: Congress Lok Sabha MP KC Venugopal on Monday stepped up the Opposition’s attack on the Centre over alleged police action against student protesters, demanding that Union Home Minister Amit Shah appear in Parliament and respond to allegations regarding the use of force during demonstrations linked to examination irregularities.

Speaking amid continued Opposition protests in Parliament, Venugopal questioned the Home Minister’s absence from the debate and demanded an explanation over allegations of pellet gun use in Delhi and the presence of security personnel carrying AK-47 rifles during protests in Bihar.

Congress questions Home Minister’s absence

Addressing the media, Venugopal asked why Amit Shah was not present in the Lok Sabha to respond to the allegations raised by Opposition members.

He alleged that the government was responsible for the reported actions against students and said the Home Minister should clarify who authorised the use of force during the protests.

Congress MP Manish Tiwari also criticised the alleged use of force against protesters, questioning whether such measures were justified against students who were demonstrating over examination-related issues.

Opposition attacks government over protest handling

Tiwari argued that legal procedures and established guidelines for handling demonstrations should have been followed. He claimed that the alleged use of pellet guns against students and visuals of security personnel carrying firearms during protests raised serious concerns.

He described the reported incidents as inappropriate and called for accountability over the handling of student demonstrations.

The Opposition has been demanding a discussion in Parliament over the alleged NEET paper leak issue, examination irregularities and the police action during protests.

Government introduces Public Examinations Amendment Bill

The remarks came after Union Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions Jitendra Singh introduced the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha.

The introduction of the Bill took place amid loud sloganeering by Opposition members, following which the House was adjourned till 2 pm.

The proposed legislation aims to strengthen the legal framework against paper leaks by introducing measures such as fast-track courts, time-bound investigations and trials, enhanced punishments, Special Task Forces and Special Public Prosecutors.

Opposition leaders, however, have criticised the Bill, arguing that stricter laws alone would not address the larger challenges affecting the education and examination system.
