Kerala CM V D Satheesan Meets US Ambassador Sergio Gor in Kochi

Kochi: Kerala Chief Minister V. D. Satheesan met Sergio Gor, Ambassador of the United States of America to India, in Kochi on Saturday to discuss ways to strengthen cooperation between Kerala and the United States in areas of mutual interest.

The Chief Secretary and other senior officials of the Kerala government were also present during the meeting.

Education, Tourism and Cultural Cooperation Discussed

The discussions focused on higher education, tourism, culture, investment and maritime development.

Satheesan highlighted the scope for closer partnerships between universities and research institutions in Kerala and the United States through joint research, academic exchanges and innovation partnerships.

The two sides also discussed opportunities to strengthen cultural and people-to-people ties between Kerala and the US.

The US Ambassador said it was his first visit to Kerala and expressed his appreciation for the state’s natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and potential as an international tourism destination.

He noted the possibility of attracting more visitors from the United States, particularly by promoting Kerala’s strengths in wellness and Ayurveda tourism.

Gor also referred to the concept of Sister Cities and suggested exploring partnerships between cities in Kerala and the United States to promote closer cultural, educational, economic and people-to-people engagement.

Kerala Seeks Greater US Investment in Ports, Logistics

Satheesan highlighted Kerala’s growing potential as a destination for international investment, particularly in ports, logistics and port-led development.

The meeting discussed opportunities linked to Vizhinjam International Seaport and Kochi Port, including maritime logistics, shipbuilding and ship repair, green bunkering and allied industries.

Gor expressed interest in facilitating greater engagement between American companies and Kerala and connecting more US businesses with investment opportunities in the state.

He said such engagements could help generate investments and strengthen economic ties between Kerala and the United States.

Kerala Proposes US Invest Desk

The meeting also discussed ways to deepen engagement with the Malayalee community and business networks in the United States.

In this context, Satheesan proposed exploring the setting up of an Invest Desk in the US to facilitate investment enquiries, connect prospective investors and companies with opportunities in Kerala, and strengthen engagement with the Malayalee diaspora and the wider US business community.

Both sides expressed interest in maintaining closer engagement and taking forward opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation between Kerala and the United States.
