Bhopal/Khajuraho, Dec 14: The Khajuraho food poisoning case took a serious turn after a fourth death was confirmed, prompting authorities to serve a show-cause notice to the local food safety officer for alleged negligence in duty. Several affected patients remain in critical condition, officials said on Saturday.
The fourth victim, who had been undergoing treatment at a district hospital, succumbed to complications caused by severe food poisoning. With this, the death toll in the incident has risen to four, intensifying concerns over lapses in food safety monitoring in the region.
Following the confirmation of the fourth death, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) served a notice to the food safety officer responsible for the Khajuraho area. The officer has been asked to explain the alleged failure in inspection and monitoring of food establishments prior to the incident.
Officials indicated that departmental action would follow based on the officer’s response.
Health authorities confirmed that multiple victims are still battling for life, with some shifted to higher medical centres for advanced treatment. Doctors said the patients showed symptoms of severe infection and dehydration after consuming contaminated food.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims had consumed food from the same local establishment. Food samples have been collected and sent for laboratory testing, while the eatery has been sealed pending investigation.
The district administration has ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident. Senior officials stated that strict action will be taken against anyone found responsible, including food vendors and regulatory staff.
The incident has raised serious questions about food safety enforcement in tourist hubs like Khajuraho, which attracts thousands of visitors every year. Authorities have announced intensified inspections of hotels, restaurants, and street food vendors in the area.
State officials assured that the government remains committed to ensuring public safety and preventing such tragedies in the future. They emphasized that accountability will be fixed at all levels once the investigation is completed.
