Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued a notice in a case challenging the parliamentary membership of MP Amritpal Singh. Vikramjit Singh has filed a petition to disqualify Amritpal Singh as an MP. The hearing occurred in the High Court today, and the High Court issued a notice to Amritpal Singh to file a reply by October 25.
Vikramjit Singh, who approached the court against Amritpal Singh, has alleged in the petition that Amritpal Singh has hidden important information in the nomination form. He has not disclosed any information about his election expenses, including the daily meetings in his support and the expenditure of money. He has accused Amritpal Singh of soliciting votes in the name of religion by using religious identity.
A petition challenging the election of Amritpal Singh had also been filed in the Supreme Court. The petitioner claimed that Article 84 of the Constitution deals with the qualifications for Parliament membership and states that no person shall be eligible to fill a seat in Parliament unless he is a citizen of India. The Supreme Court dismissed the petition, stating that there are prescribed procedures and provisions in the Representation of the People Act for such matters.
