Kharge: BJP Leaders Misled House on Vande Mataram Facts

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Tuesday accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders of misleading the Rajya Sabha on facts related to Vande Mataram. Speaking in the House, he said that no one requires “lessons on the song, nationalism, and patriotism” from BJP. Kharge asserted that it was inappropriate to single out Congress or its leaders while others remain unaccountable. He further remarked that those who did not sing Vande Mataram during the freedom struggle are now presenting themselves as the guardians of the song, calling it a display of hypocrisy.

Historical Misrepresentation Alleged

Kharge specifically pointed out that the Prime Minister had misled the House regarding correspondence between Jawaharlal Nehru and Subhas Chandra Bose related to Vande Mataram. He criticised what he described as an “attempt to create controversy” over Nehru’s role, stating that it disrespects freedom fighters, including Nehru, Bose, Rabindranath Tagore, and others. Kharge reminded the Parliament that Congress leaders had been singing Vande Mataram for decades and that the song had been central to the party’s legacy.

Critique of Parliamentary Priorities

Kharge argued that Parliament should focus on pressing issues such as economic challenges, job creation, and currency depreciation rather than symbolic debates. He suggested that the ruling party seemed more focused on political campaigning than addressing urgent national problems, implying a distraction from governance.

Context: The Ongoing Vande Mataram Debate

The remarks come amid a heated debate over the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, with BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, pushing for recognition of the full song and claiming that the 1937 modifications by Congress diluted its national significance. Opposition leaders, however, warn that politicizing the song risks undermining its historical legacy as a unifying anthem of India’s freedom struggle.
