Kolkata Businessman Kidnapped and Robbed by Fake CID Officers in Moving SUV; Ransom of Rs 1 Crore Demanded

Kolkata: A businessman from North 24 Parganas in West Bengal was allegedly kidnapped and robbed in a moving car by unidentified men posing as Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officers in central Kolkata, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place recently near Red Road in central Kolkata on Friday. Police have launched an investigation into the matter after receiving a complaint from the businessman.

How the Incident Was Executed

According to the complaint, the businessman, hailing from Baduria in North 24 Parganas and engaged in import-export trade, had visited a shopping mall in Phoolbagan with two associates when the incident occurred.

A group of men approached them, posing as CID officers, and used the pretext of a “search operation” to take the businessman away in a black SUV. When his associates tried to intervene, they were assaulted.

Inside the moving vehicle, the victim was allegedly held at gunpoint, beaten, and pressured to pay a ransom of Rs 1 crore. The accused reportedly continued threatening him during the drive while demanding money.

Motive Behind the Crime

Police said the primary motive appeared to be extortion through ransom demand, with the accused targeting the businessman after identifying him as financially capable due to his trade background. When the ransom demand was not fulfilled, the attackers robbed him of cash and valuables instead.

Victim Robbed of Cash and Gold Chain

According to the complaint, the businessman was robbed of a gold chain worth Rs 3 lakh and Rs 70,000 in cash.

A senior officer of Kolkata Police said, “The kidnappers allegedly demanded a ransom of 1 crore rupees from the businessman. After the amount was denied, they robbed the victim of Rs 70,000 and a gold chain and fled.”

Victim Pushed Out Near Madhyamgram

Police said that after the accused learned that the victim’s associates had alerted authorities, they pushed him out of the moving vehicle near Madhyamgram in North 24 Parganas and fled the scene.

Police Investigation Underway 

Police are scanning CCTV footage from Phoolbagan, Red Road, and surrounding areas to trace the accused. Efforts are underway to identify the gang involved in impersonation of CID officers and organized extortion.
