Kyiv: Russia carried out a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, causing widespread damage to residential areas, public infrastructure, and historic religious sites, including the Pechersk Lavra monastery complex.

Heavy Missile and Drone Assault on Kyiv
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched a combined wave of missiles and drones targeting multiple cities, with Kyiv facing the most severe impact. Air defence systems intercepted several incoming projectiles, but many still struck urban areas.
Historic Cathedral and Monastery Complex Damaged
The Dormition Cathedral inside the UNESCO-listed Pechersk Lavra monastery caught fire after being hit during the attack. Authorities and heritage experts confirmed significant damage to the 11th-century religious site, one of Ukraine’s most important cultural landmarks.
Residential buildings, schools, and cultural facilities were also damaged in several districts of Kyiv. Fires broke out at multiple locations, forcing emergency crews to carry out large-scale rescue operations.
Casualties and Rescue Operations
At least four people have been confirmed dead and several others injured in Kyiv, according to official emergency services. Some international reports suggest higher casualties across Ukraine, but Kyiv-specific figures remain at least four confirmed deaths at this stage.
Conflicting Claims Over Responsibility
Ukraine has accused Russia of targeting civilian infrastructure, while Russia has denied striking the monastery, claiming the damage may have been caused by a misfired Ukrainian air defence missile. These claims have not been independently verified.
The attack is part of the ongoing Russia–Ukraine war, where both sides continue long-range strikes despite repeated international calls for de-escalation and renewed peace efforts.
