A wave of joy has swept through the Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh as Seabuckthorn—a plant rich in traditional and medicinal properties and known locally as ‘Chharma’—has received the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This significant recognition will not only provide legal protection for the authenticity and quality of Chharma but also pave the way for its processed products to gain new recognition at both national and international levels.
Benefits of the GI Tag for Producers
The primary advantage of the GI tag is that it ensures the authenticity of Chharma and its derivatives, such as juices, jams, and herbal products. This is likely to boost market demand. Furthermore, it will help curb the proliferation of counterfeit products, thereby safeguarding the rights of regional producers and ensuring they receive fair compensation for their hard work.
A Vital Source of Livelihood
Seabuckthorn plants grow naturally across approximately 1,500 hectares in the Lahaul-Spiti district. More than 2,000 tribal women are directly or indirectly involved in the processes of harvesting, processing, and value addition associated with the plant. Local women believe that the GI tag will secure better markets for their Chharma products and lead to increased incomes.
Opportunities for Employment and Self-Employment
For women associated with local self-help groups, Chharma is not merely a plant but a crucial source of livelihood. This new recognition will create fresh opportunities for local employment and self-employment for the region’s youth and women. It is anticipated that the GI tag will elevate this invaluable traditional product from Lahaul onto the global stage, thereby strengthening the local economy.
