Lalit Modi Issues Apology to Indian Government Over ‘Two Fugitives’ Remark

New Delhi: Former Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Lalit Modi apologized to the Indian government on Monday. The apology came days after a video went viral in which he referred to himself and liquor baron Vijay Mallya as “India’s two biggest fugitives.” The comment was widely seen as a dig at the country.

Modi wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“If I have hurt anyone’s sentiments, especially those of the Indian government, for whom I have the highest respect, I apologize. This statement was misunderstood and was never intended. My deepest apologies.”

    Criticism over viral video

The apology came after a video went viral in which Modi was heard saying at Mallya’s lavish birthday celebration in London: “We are two fugitives, India’s biggest fugitives.” Modi shared it on Instagram, captioning it: “Let me do something to break the internet down again. Something for you folks. Wat your heart out with envy.”

The post sparked sharp reactions online, with many accusing Modi and Mallya of mocking the Indian government and legal system. Following the controversy, Modi deleted the video from his social media accounts.

    Emphasis on India’s legal process

In an indirect response to this comment, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated that individuals wanted by Indian law will be brought back to face justice. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said:
“We are fully committed to bringing back those who are fugitives and wanted by law in India. This involves numerous legal processes, but we are committed to bringing them back to face trial in Indian courts.”

     Background of Modi and Mallya

Lalit Modi left India in 2010 after being accused of tax evasion, money laundering, and proxy ownership related to the IPL. The Enforcement Directorate claims that he manipulated the allocation of IPL broadcast rights in 2009 and received alleged kickbacks of over ₹125 crore.

Vijay Mallya, former chairman of United Breweries and promoter of Kingfisher Airlines, left India in 2016 following allegations of financial fraud. He is accused of defaulting on several bank loans, reportedly amounting to approximately ₹9,000 crore. In 2019, the Indian government declared him a “fugitive economic offender,” a designation he challenged in the High Court.

The two businessmen were seen together at a lavish private party in London in July, where they were filmed singing Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.” This karaoke evening was Lalit Modi’s annual summer party and was attended by over 300 guests.
