Largest Milk Producing State

A report by the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying states that Punjab is the country’s leading milk producer. We’ve always heard and heard that Punjabis are healthy people and that rivers of milk and ghee flow in Punjab. A recent central-level report also confirms this. Statistics show that Punjab has the highest per capita milk availability. Currently, 1.3 kg of milk is available per person daily, compared to 1.2 kg per person last year. Rajasthan and Haryana are also considered leading milk producing states. Rajasthan’s per capita milk production is equal to Punjab’s, while Haryana’s is slightly lower, at 1.1 kg per person. If we take the national average, the average per capita milk availability in the country is 485 grams. In 202223, it was even less than this, that is, 459 grams. In 2024-25, the record milk production in Punjab was 148.7 lakh tonnes. Punjab is a smaller state compared to Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Although Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest milk production in the country at 388.2 lakh tonnes, the average availability there is only 447 grams. In Himachal, the majority of the population is in the villages and you can see shepherds there, but the availability there is only 666 grams. In Uttarakhand, it’s 456 grams and in Ladakh, it’s 214 grams. Chandigarh, being primarily an urban area, has a mere 141 grams of milk available. This means that most of the milk sold in Chandigarh is imported brands. Despite this, the common man is suffering. Despite the availability of milk, its prices are not decreasing, but are rising. As milk prices rise, so do the prices of yogurt, lassi, cheese, ghee, and butter. Cases of adulteration are also being reported, which are inexcusable. When milk production is high and almost every household in the villages has dairy animals, why is the public burdened by the high prices of milk?
