New Delhi: Around 18 people including three children have been reportedly killed while as several others are said to be injured in a stampede which happens on platform number 14 and 15 of the New Delhi Railway Station here due to a large crowd of passengers, on Saturday late night. The deceased were identified as Aaha Devi, 79, Pinky Devi, 41, Sheela Devi, 50, Vyom, 25, Poonam Devi, 40, Lalita Devi, 35, Suruchi, 11, Krishna Devi, 40, Vijay Sah, 15, Neeraj, 12, Shanti Devi, 40, Pooja Kumar, 8, Sangeeta Malik, Poonam both aged 34, Mamta Jha, 40, Riya Singh, 7, Baby Kumari, 24, and Manoj, 47.
Meanwhile, an eyewitness, an IAF sergeant, recounted on Sunday that despite announcements and efforts to convince people to avoid gathering in large numbers, the crowd remained unmanageable. He said that the administration attempted to control the crowd, but people didn’t listen.
Official sources said that the passengers had gathered at the platforms where a stampede broke out in large numbers to leave for Prayagraj to attend the Mahakumbh Mela.
As per the available information, around four fire tenders have been rushed to the spot.
However, till the time of filing of this report, no official statement had been made by the Railways.
The Mahakumbh started in the city of Prayagraj from January 13, which will continue till February 26.
The injured passengers have been shifted to Delhi’s Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Hospital (LNJP) hospital.
Prime Minister Modi in a post on X, shared “Distressed by the stampede at New Delhi Railway Station. My thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured have a speedy recovery. The authorities are assisting all those who have been affected by this stampede.”
