Agartala: Infiltration from unrest-torn Bangladesh into northeastern India continues, as security forces in Tripura recently apprehended 16 Bangladeshi nationals.

Authorities reported that 12 detainees, including women and minors, were arrested at Teliamura Railway Station in Khowai district by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and the Government Railway Police (GRP), with assistance from the Border Security Force (BSF).

According to the detainees, they had crossed into India through the Silachari area of Gomati district aided by a cross-border agent and were on their way to Delhi in search of employment.

In a separate incident, four other Bangladeshi nationals, including one woman, were arrested at Dharmanagar Railway Station during a routine inspection of the Tripura Sundari Express train. They admitted to entering India via the Sonamura border in Sepahijala district with the help of an intermediary, also intending to reach Delhi for work.

An official statement highlighted the effective collaboration of security agencies in protecting railway stations and routes from illegal cross-border activities.

In the past four months, approximately 500 Bangladeshi nationals and over 63 Rohingyas have been arrested by the GRP, BSF, and Tripura Police after they illegally entered India. The Rohingyas fled camps in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, where over a million displaced individuals from Myanmar have been living since 2017.

Following the rise in unrest in Bangladesh starting in June-July, the BSF has increased surveillance along the 4,096-km border to prevent cross-border crime and infiltration.

Five Indian states—West Bengal (2,216 km), Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km), and Assam (263 km)—share a border with Bangladesh.
