Imphal: On Sunday, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh announced the deportation of 26 Myanmarese nationals who had entered India via the state’s border. In a post on X, Singh stated, “A group of 26 Myanmarese nationals who entered India through Manipur’s porous border were deported to their home country today.”

Singh, who also oversees the Home portfolio, emphasized the government’s commitment to providing humanitarian aid to those fleeing conflict while maintaining a strict policy against allowing illegal migrants to remain in Manipur.

According to a senior official from the Manipur Home Department, the deported individuals were handed over to authorities from Myanmar by the Manipur police and central forces stationed near Moreh town along the border. Since March 8 of last year, a total of 141 Myanmarese nationals, including women and children, have been deported in four separate phases.

In collaboration with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and central security forces, 115 Myanmarese nationals were deported last year in three phases. Following the military coup in Myanmar on February 1, 2021, approximately 35,000 people from Myanmar, including women, the elderly, and children, have sought refuge in 11 districts of Mizoram.

These individuals are currently residing in over a hundred relief camps across six districts, while many others are staying with relatives, friends, or in rented accommodations, as reported by a Mizoram Home Department official. In Manipur, more than 6,000 Myanmarese nationals have taken refuge in various bordering districts. Mizoram and Manipur share extensive unfenced borders with Myanmar, measuring 518 km and 400 km, respectively.

In 2022, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) instructed both the Manipur and Mizoram governments to record the biometric and biographic data of all Myanmar refugees.
