Shimla: A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Chandigarh court on Saturday convicted 7 police officers and jawans arrested for the murder of a witness in the Gudiya rape and murder case in Kotkhai, Himachal Pradesh in 2017. Himachal Inspector General of Police (IG) Zahoor Haider Zaidi and seven others have been convicted.
Apart from Zaidi, the then DSP Theog Manoj Joshi, SI Rajinder Singh, ASI Deep Chand Sharma, HHC Mohan Lal, HHC Surat Singh, HC Rafi Mohammad and constable Ranit Sateta are included.
At the same time, the then SP Shimla DW Negi has been acquitted.

Let us tell you that on July 4, 2017, a 16-year-old girl student went missing while returning from school in Kotkhai of Shimla district. On July 6, the body of the girl student was found naked in the Tandi forest of Kotkhai. The police found in the investigation that the girl was raped and then murdered.
To investigate this case, an SIT was formed under the chairmanship of the then IG of Shimla, Syed Zahoor Haider Zaidi. The SIT arrested six accused including a local youth in this case. One of these Nepali youth Suraj died during police custody in Kotkhai police station.
After this, the case was handed over to the CBI. The CBI investigation found that the accused Suraj died due to police torture during interrogation. On this basis, the CBI registered a case against IG Zaidi and nine other police officers and employees related to the case under several serious sections including section 302 of murder, section 201 of destroying evidence.
In the year 2017, this case was transferred from Shimla District Court to Chandigarh CBI Court. Today seven police officers and employees have been convicted. IG Zaidi, named in the case, was suspended by the Himachal Pradesh government on January 15, 2020 and was reinstated in the year 2023 after about 3 years.
